Organizer's Words

Interpreting studies are rooted in the West. Professional insights, teaching methods, and theoretical development are usually based on Western languages, cultures, societies, and economic systems. However, there are significant differences between Asia and Western languages, social systems, cultural customs, and educational philosophies. Therefore, when interpreting teachers in Asia attempt to apply Western teaching theories or methods in an Oriental classroom, they encounter many obstacles. As a result, some teachers have begun to conduct new research to explore whether interpreting practice and teaching in Asia should take a different direction than in Europe and America.

This is the context that gave rise to the "Asia Interpreting Symposium". The Graduate Program in Translation and Interpretation of National Taiwan University is pleased to organize the 2023 edition. Experienced interpreting teachers from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea will be invited to participate in panel discussions about interpreting pedagogy in their respective regions. Teachers, students, and the general public who are interested in interpreting practice, interpreting teaching, and interpreting research are welcome to attend this online meeting.
